A group of homosexuals two days ago stormed the Senate to defend same sex marriage.
One of the protagonists, Dr. Otibho Obiowu, argued that criminalizing same sex marriage would make many young men and women refugees in their fatherland, adding that many Nigerians migrated abroad due to lack of enabling legislation to protect their belief in same sex marriage.
“Due to lack of enabling law that would protect gays, lesbians and bisexuals, many of these people are living pretentious lives. Criminalizing same sex marriage makes us refugees, it forces us to seek asylum in other countries. This also affects our beloved country as emigration causes brain drain.
I've always said everyone's sexual preference is their business and I have nothing against gay people but there's definitely a limit. They can do themselves behind close doors, or date openly, that's their business, but MARRIAGE? No way in hell should that be allowed in this country. But why are they even debating this? “Many talented Nigerians are living in the diaspora openly as gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals. We contribute positively to the development of our country of residence but we are afraid to come and live and contribute to the development of our motherland because of victimization.
“Some Nigerian lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals living in the diaspora are married to same sex partners or planning to do so. This is indeed unfair because consensual adult relationship should not be punished. Love is tender, a beautiful thing that should be celebrated, not condemned or criminalized,” he said.
After Obiowu’s presentation, many gays and lesbians who came to the public hearing to argue their case insisted that there is nothing wrong with the practice, stating that they were being stigmatized unnecessarily.
Also present at the hearing were members of the Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON). The group, which kicked against same sex marriage, warned the legislators against partaking in any move that would jeopardize the norms and values of the Nigerian people.
The group described same sex marriage as biblically wrong, legally condemned and medically wrong. According to the group, same sex marriage would end in futility.
It would be recalled that Senator Domingo Obende representing Edo North Senatorial District, recently sponsored a Bill that will make homosexuality illegitimate.
Declaring open a public hearing on the Bill for an act to transfer convicted offenders (2011) and same sex marriage (Prohibition) Bill, organized by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, openly condemned the practice, describing same sex marriage as offensive to both culture and tradition.
Mark said the whole idea was foreign and alien to Nigerian culture. According to him, considering such act as freedom would be a freedom too many “and Nigerians cannot allow their traditions and value system to be eroded by foreign culture.”
